October 26-30

Hello Parents,

We have a very exciting week ahead! This is our last week for our We Scare Hunger Food Drive and we are almost at our class goal of 100 food items! Only 15 more to go! The top 2 classes get to duck tape the Principal and Vice-Principal to the wall! Oh what fun that would be! My class came in 3rd last year so I am hoping we can come into the top 2!!!
Also, if we reach our goal the class gets a pyjama and bring your stuffy day! We also have our Dance-a-thon on Friday.

***On Friday children are allowed to wear costumes but no masks, no swords etc. are allowed.***

*Dance-a-thon pledge forms are due on Friday, October 30th as well. This is a very important Parent Council fundraiser and we thank you for your support.

In Language, we continue to use adjectives to describe a variety of things. We did two descriptive writing activities, describing two different pumpkins. We will continue to use adjectives to describe various things this week. Please continue to practice the word wall words each day. These are very important words that your child needs to know to help them in their reading journey.

Homework folders are due at the end of this week. I hope it has been a good first experience for you and your child.

In Math, we are practising our counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Students worked in pairs to explore different ways to show a number (e.g. using pictures, numbers, tallies, words etc.) We will use ten frames this week to show a variety of numbers.

Important Dates:
  • Friday, October 30th - Dance-a-thon (pledge forms due) Block 2
  • Friday, October 30th - Wear Halloween costumes

  • October 13-30th - We Scare Hunger Food Drive (15 more to go to reach 100!)
  • October 29th - Homework folders due

Have a wonderful week!!

October 18th Blog

Hello Parents,

The weather is starting to get pretty cool in the mornings and sometimes throughout the day. Please make sure your child has a hat and warm coat to wear. Remember to label all items (coats, hats, mittens, scarves etc.)

After studying the word wall words for five weeks, each child was assessed on these 28 words. This week, I will be sending home a summary of their results. Remember that it is very important that your child know all these words by sight. These words appear frequently in texts and if they don’t know them then they will struggle to read. Grade 1 is a huge year for your child since it is the year that most of them will learn how to read for the first time. There are a few who already come to Grade 1 with a large bank of sight words and can read more advanced texts. Not to worry, though, if your child is a beginner reader because this is the year we learn how to read. Knowing all their word wall words is essential to aid in this learning. Raz Kids is a fantastic way for your child to practice their reading and little by little, advance their reading level. If we work together, as partners in your child’s learning, your child will be well on their way to becoming a grade level reader or even a reader who reads beyond grade 1!

In Language, we will continue to use adjectives to describe a variety of things. We are also practising how to write a complete sentence using a writer’s checklist.

Writer’s Checklist:
  1. Capitals
  2. Spaces between words
  3. End punctuation (  .   !   ?   )
  4. My sentence makes sense

In Math, we will continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s in a variety of ways. Students will explore different ways to show a number (e.g. using pictures, numbers, tallies, words, ten frame etc.) These activities will continue throughout October.

Important Dates:

  • Wednesday, October 21st - Library Book Exchange
  • Wednesday, October 20th - Makermobile Workshop for our class
  • October 13-30th - We Scare Hunger Food Drive (Our class goal is 100!)

Have a Fantastic Week!!

October 13-16

Happy 4 Day week Everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful, family and fun filled Thanksgiving weekend!! I was very Thankful for the beautiful weather!

We are going to be doing a neat art activity that goes with the story “The Leaf Man” that uses various types, colours and sizes of leaves so your child can bring in a couple of leaves anytime this coming week while the weather is still nice.

I hope that the Homework calendar activities are going well at home. If you have any questions about the homework, please write me a note in your child’s agenda. Homework isn’t due (even if it is all completed early) until the end of the month. Please make sure your child is taking advantage of Raz-Kids

In Language, we continue to use adjectives to describe a variety of things. We are also learning how to write a complete sentence by discussing what that means and looks like. The students are learning reading strategies to help them attack words. So far, they know Stretchy the Snake and Chunky Monkey. Ask them about these. They are very good detectives when finding chunks, endings and word wall words in words they see in various texts.

In Math, we will be practising counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’sin a variety of ways. Students will explore different ways to show a number (e.g. using pictures, numbers, tallies, words, ten frame etc.) These activities will continue throughout October.

Important Dates:

  • Friday, October 16th - Jersey Day for United Way. Any donations are welcome
  • October 13-30th - We Scare Hunger Food Drive
  • Friday, October 16th - Enviro Assembly 1:30pm
