March 29-April 1

I hope you had a wonderful Easter long weekend with your family!

Just a note we have 3 confirmed cases of head lice in our class. Please make sure to check your children.

Due to the two short weeks, we will not be doing any new words this week. We will continue to study last week’s words and do a brief review of all the words to date. A copy will be sent home with your child for you to review with them. Here are last week’s words:

1. tall
2. when
3. kick
4. but
5. old

In Math, we will continue to learn to identify a variety of coins and make coin amounts up to 20 cents. We will open up a store for the children so that they can practice using money amounts to buy small items from our treasure box.

In Science, we will continue our exploration of various objects and the materials that they are made of (e.g. a pencil is made out of wood from trees, our chairs are made out of plastic, our school is made out of bricks etc.). We will follow this with making structures out of various materials to test their strength and durability.

Important Dates:
Wednesday, March 30th - Library exchange
Tuesday, April 5th - Easter Mass 1:30-2:30

If you have any questions or concerns, please write me a note in your child’s agenda.

Have a great week!
Tiffany Lawless

March 21-24

Welcome back from your break! I hope everyone had a restful March break.

St. Cecilia Lenten Project
Thanks to those families who have sent in a donation for our Lenten Project. The money raised will benefit refugee families who have come to live in Ottawa as well as families in Africa who don’t have access to clean water. Our children are learning that everyone at any age can make a difference in the lives of others in need. A very important life lesson! We have one more week to collect donations for this project.

Here are the new word wall words for this week and next week:
1. tall
2. when
3. kick

5. old

Over the next two weeks, in Math, we will finish our study of 3D solids by exploring which 3D solids can slide, roll and stack. We will also continue to learn to identify a variety of coins and make coin amounts up to 20 cents.

In Science, we will continue our exploration of various objects and the materials that they are made of (e.g. a pencil is made out of wood from trees, our chairs are made out of plastic, our school is made out of bricks etc.). In Math, we are studying 3D solids and how they differ from 2D shapes. 3D solids are not flat like 2D shapes. They have different names to describe their properties (e.g. 2D Shapes: sides and vertices, 3D Solids: edges, vertices and faces). We will continue to explore which 3D solids can slide, roll and stack. This week, we will walk around the school looking for examples of 3D solids in the real world and create a pic collage of our findings.
In Science, we will continue our exploration of various objects and the materials that they are made of (e.g. a pencil is made out of wood from trees, our chairs are made out of plastic, our school is made out of bricks etc.).

Waste-Free Wednesdays
Waste-Free Wednesdays are going pretty good. We are trying to BUMP UP the number of waste-free lunches. It would be super if we could increase the number of waste-free lunches each Wednesday. This initiative helps our children understand the importance of pitching in to help reduce waste in our environment. We regularly talk about where items get put into each day (e.g. paper towel, straws, yogurt containers, plastic wrap, food scraps etc.) I monitor the garbage container daily to ensure our children know where their items go. They are incredible at doing this! I am so proud of our class for their efforts! We are recycling superstars!!!

Important Dates:
Wednesday, March 9th - Library Exchange
March 14th to March 18th - March Break - No School
Thursday, March 24th - Holy Week Presentation 10:45am **Our worship song
Friday, March 25th - Good Friday - No School

Have a wonderful week and a fabulous March break!!!
