November 2-5

Hello Parents,

We had a very exciting week! The Dance-a-Thon was a ton of fun! Our class brought in 130 food items for the We Scare Hunger Food Drive! For reaching our class goal of 100 cans, our class has earned a pyjama and bring your stuffy day on Friday, November 5th! Thank you very much for all your donations!

*If you still have Dance-a-thon pledge forms, please return them as soon as possible. Thank you for all your wonderful support with the food drive and pledge form money raised!

In Language, we continue to use adjectives to describe various things. We described a white ghost pumpkin, a pumpkin or cat last week. This week they will colour a dragon and then describe them using adjectives while writing telling sentences (Declarative Sentences). Telling sentences require a period at the end. The students are required to use a writer’s checklist to check for their written work. Here is what it looks like:

Writer’s Checklist:
  • My sentence starts with a capital letter
  • My sentence has spaces in between words
  • My sentence ends with punctuation ( .   ?   !   )
  • My sentence makes sense

In Math, we practice counting to 100 by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s on a daily basis. Please practice skip counting at home. Students are learning how to use a Ten Frame to show numbers to 20. We will continue using ten frames this week. You can help your child with their number sense by having your child count objects in their environment: count dinner settings, apples you purchase at the store, steps in your house, smarties in a box, cans in your cupboard etc. Look for math everywhere! The possibilities are endless!

In Science, we are exploring our knowledge about Seasons and Seasonal Changes. This week, we will continue to learn more about each season by researching information about each one using books and technology.

Last week, our class practiced what to do during a lockdown drill. They did a fantastic job! I didn’t have to tell them much because they already knew a lot about the procedure! Impressive! We will have a school lockdown drill this week to make sure all students know what to do in the event of a real lockdown.

Please ensure that you read and initial your child’s agenda each day. I check them every day after first recess. Students take the time to write in them and sometimes I write a note for you to read. I told the class that it is their responsibility for bringing their agenda to school every day. They are not allowed to tell me that their mom or dad forgot to pack their agenda. Please remind them that they should pack their agenda and their lunch daily. Responsibility is one of our learning skills and a very important one. I use that word regularly throughout the day. Thanks for your support.

Note that interview night is Thursday, November 19th starting at 4:00pm. If you already know that this night doesn’t work for you, please write me a note in your child’s agenda. I would like to meet with every family for the Progress Reports. Mme. T and I are available most mornings at 8:30am.

Important Dates:
  • Tuesday, November 3rd - School Council Meeting 6:30pm
  • Wednesday, November 4th - Library Book Exchange
  • Thursday, November 5th - Photo Retake Day
  • Friday, November 6th - Progress Reports go home

Have a wonderful week!

Hello Parents,

We have a very exciting week ahead! This is our last week for our We Scare Hunger Food Drive and we are almost at our class goal of 100 food items! Only 15 more to go! The top 2 classes get to duck tape the Principal and Vice-Principal to the wall! Oh what fun that would be! My class came in 3rd last year so I am hoping we can come into the top 2!!!
Also, if we reach our goal the class gets a pyjama and bring your stuffy day! We also have our Dance-a-thon on Friday.

***On Friday children are allowed to wear costumes but no masks, no swords etc. are allowed.***

In Language, we continue to use adjectives to describe a variety of things. We did two descriptive writing activities, describing two different pumpkins. We will continue to use adjectives to describe various things this week. Please continue to practice the word wall words each day. These are very important words that your child needs to know to help them in their reading journey.

Homework folders are due at the end of this week. I hope it has been a good first experience for you and your child.

In Math, we are practising our counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Students worked in pairs to explore different ways to show a number (e.g. using pictures, numbers, tallies, words etc.) We will use ten frames this week to show a variety of numbers.

October 18th Blog

Hello Parents,

The weather is starting to get pretty cool in the mornings and sometimes throughout the day. Please make sure your child has a hat and warm coat to wear. Remember to label all items (coats, hats, mittens, scarves etc.)

After studying the word wall words for five weeks, each child was assessed on these 28 words. This week, I will be sending home a summary of their results. Remember that it is very important that your child know all these words by sight. These words appear frequently in texts and if they don’t know them then they will struggle to read. Grade 1 is a huge year for your child since it is the year that most of them will learn how to read for the first time. There are a few who already come to Grade 1 with a large bank of sight words and can read more advanced texts. Not to worry, though, if your child is a beginner reader because this is the year we learn how to read. Knowing all their word wall words is essential to aid in this learning. Raz Kids is a fantastic way for your child to practice their reading and little by little, advance their reading level. If we work together, as partners in your child’s learning, your child will be well on their way to becoming a grade level reader or even a reader who reads beyond grade 1!

In Language, we will continue to use adjectives to describe a variety of things. We are also practising how to write a complete sentence using a writer’s checklist.

Writer’s Checklist:
  1. Capitals
  2. Spaces between words
  3. End punctuation (  .   !   ?   )
  4. My sentence makes sense

In Math, we will continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s in a variety of ways. Students will explore different ways to show a number (e.g. using pictures, numbers, tallies, words, ten frame etc.) These activities will continue throughout October.

Important Dates:

  • Wednesday, October 21st - Library Book Exchange
  • Wednesday, October 20th - Makermobile Workshop for our class
  • October 13-30th - We Scare Hunger Food Drive (Our class goal is 100!)

Have a Fantastic Week!!

October 13-16

Happy 4 Day week Everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful, family and fun filled Thanksgiving weekend!! I was very Thankful for the beautiful weather!

We are going to be doing a neat art activity that goes with the story “The Leaf Man” that uses various types, colours and sizes of leaves so your child can bring in a couple of leaves anytime this coming week while the weather is still nice.

I hope that the Homework calendar activities are going well at home. If you have any questions about the homework, please write me a note in your child’s agenda. Homework isn’t due (even if it is all completed early) until the end of the month. Please make sure your child is taking advantage of Raz-Kids

In Language, we continue to use adjectives to describe a variety of things. We are also learning how to write a complete sentence by discussing what that means and looks like. The students are learning reading strategies to help them attack words. So far, they know Stretchy the Snake and Chunky Monkey. Ask them about these. They are very good detectives when finding chunks, endings and word wall words in words they see in various texts.

In Math, we will be practising counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’sin a variety of ways. Students will explore different ways to show a number (e.g. using pictures, numbers, tallies, words, ten frame etc.) These activities will continue throughout October.

Important Dates:

  • Friday, October 16th - Jersey Day for United Way. Any donations are welcome
  • October 13-30th - We Scare Hunger Food Drive
  • Friday, October 16th - Enviro Assembly 1:30pm
